Winter Hair Repair using the L.O.C Method

By Jackie M.

Hey y’all!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Holidays are right around the corner, and with holidays comes bitter cold weather. So, my curls are in desperate need of some TLC. I decided to try the L.O.C. Method which stands for Leave-In/Oil/Cream in the order that it should be applied to your hair.
Recently I tried using an Oyin Handmade product for the first time, and had pretty good results, so I took another trip to Sally Beauty to find an oil and cream to add to the leave-in. I’m slowly turning into a product junkie! Oh dear… seems like it anyways.

These were my products of choice for my winter hair repair regimen:

1. LEAVE-INOyin Handmade Juices & Berries Nourishing Herbal Leave-In Hair Tonic

2. OILSunny Isle Extra Dark Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO)

3. CREAM Oyin Handmade Hair Dew Daily Hair Quenching Lotion

I also had to purchase a deep conditioning cap. This is a great brand below:

My Curl Health History:

Before I applied my products, I was working with two day old curls that I actually cleansed and conditioned, however my curls are painfully dry, and my ends are very “snappy”. I have to admit I have to not been able to thouroughly condition my hair since having to take care of it on my own. It has also been extremely challenging to rinse my hair adequately and other things that my hair needs since I am living in a new city. I used to go to a regular profession hairstylist twice a week, and my hair was so thick and strong then see throwback pics here:

My hair is really struggling these days and I want to show you the difference before letting you know my L.O.C. Method results.

My hair is brittle, dry, and very weak these days and I attribute it to having a bad hair chop months ago, and struggling to maintain my hair on my own. I also have been overheating my curls, trying Curlformers, Softhood, blow dryer, etc, and not using heat protectant has really affected my hair. I’m not a hairstylist and trial and error has  made this journey more challenging for me. The difference is I feel that my hair is limp, and seems to be stuck at one length: Granted my curls can withstand a lot, but I think I have overconditioned and overheated them, and now they just feel weak.

To repair the dryness, I am committing to conditioning with this winter curly cocktail at least once a month, and less washing of the hair. No heat with Curlformers *fingers crossed* and maybe no Denman brush only finger detangling for the next 3 months.

My Winter Hair Repair Regimen:

Starting on starving, recently two strand twisted hair, I unraveled all of my twists and one at a time, and applied product in small sections from ends up, focusing more on my ends. My hair was so frizzy, and ends are in bad shape, see pics below:

Start with the Oyin Handmade Juices and Berries Leave-in. This comes in a spray bottle, so I saturated my curls and hand-rolled to make sure the product really got into my ends. Apply The JAMAICAN BLACK CASTOR OIL (JBCO) next. I decided to use JBCO because have had great results using Shea Moisture JBCO products before. Focused on my ends again, and hand-rolling really helped!
I applied the Oyin Handmade Hair Dew Hair Lotion, as my cream product. Then retwisted my hair in bigger sections.
Trying out this Hair Dew for the first time, and it’s another winner from Oyin Handmade! It’s lightly scented and lightweight, white cream. I placed my deep conditioning cap on and left it overnight, crunching noises every time I moved. Sorry to my poor husband lol he was not intrigued by the crunching noises haha.

The Results Are In:

I think my curls really appreciated this curly cocktail! No more frizzies, my ends are behaving, and they are shiny.

Don’t let your curls suffer in the cold like I started to do. Give your curls adequate moisture and I definitely recommend Oyin Handmade products along with 100% JBCO to get you started. Have a Happy Thanksgiving and thanks for reading! CW

Product Review: Oyin Handmade Juices&Berries Nourishing Herbal Leave-In Hair Tonic

By Jackie M.

Curly girls relate with me.

In search of a moisturizing product… in search of slip… in need of hydration, in need of holding power! Lol how many of us can relate?

It’s almost winter time, so that means more breakage, more dryness, more starvation amongst the type 4 curly heads across the world. Can we collectively feel each other’s pain today and all season, *moment of silence, crickets and such*…because this is when DIY natural hair care gets tough. I’m currently in a stage of dry hair, and decided to look for something new to hydrate my hair. Something that I personally haven’t tried before. So I went to Sally Beauty and picked up a highly raved about Oyin Handmade product.

This review is about my experience using Oyin Handmade Juices & Berries Nourishing Herbal Leave-In Hair Tonic!

I purchased this product last night for about $14 from my nearby Sally Beauty Supply. Before I went to pick this up, I read reviews on Amazon.com, and NaturallyCurly.com looking for words like, “smells good”, “lightweight hold”, “moisturizing”, “hydrating”, and that it lasts more than one day.

I have Low-Porosity curls so my hair naturally absorbs water based products well, and responds well to products with hydrating qualities. I spritz this OYIN leave in hair Tonic from ends to roots making sure to saturate my hair thoroughly because my curls were one-week old between washes. See dryness below:

Above you can see how pitiful my strands were, I don’t do the best job applying product during the week. I admit to neglecting the need to hydrate more often, and this is what it ends up looking like towards the end of the work week in a bun/twisted bun. Dry honey dry!

This product comes in a 8.4 oz spray bottle which honestly seems like a little amount, but my experience has taught me that a good product should be “Less is More.” In other words I should be able to get away with less application per section of hair. The product is known for having a mixture of good smelling herbs and stuff. I agree that it smells lovely.

My first impression is that it smells like yummy blueberries, and raspberries. But I know there are herbs in it too, it has that fresh natural scent as well. I think the spray bottle is the only negative it’s hard on my hand to keep pumping it out, makes my hand tired. But the product is more of a liquid, literally reminds of a fruit juice you may drink, but trust me DON’T Drink It! lol although it is very tempting. Below is my hair right after I applied this amazing leave-in (note no filters applied on most of these pics):

Super soft and shiny effect right after spraying. Two things I always appreciate for my dry thirsty curls. I decided to two strand twist my curls, overnight and below are my results the next morning:I can honestly say my curls are very happy with this product. Two thumbs up! Give Oyin Handmade Juices&Berries Herbal Hair Tonic a try! It won’t dissappoint. Let me know your thoughts in the comments on this post, and thank you for reading! CW 💕

Product Review: Curlformers Softhood Dryer Attachment

By Jackie M.

Hello ladies!

I have been doing the DIY natural thing for a minute now. Sorry for my absence from blogging, but life happens, and I’ve been crazy busy! Following my first Devacut experience and not having a regular stylist, I’ve just been figuring things out.

Well, just a few months ago I won a giveaway on the NaturallyCurly blog for the Curlformers Pro Glam Kit and Softhood Dryer attachment! I was so excited I actually won something because I’m forever signing up for free stuff. Lol so this felt like a big deal to me.

I tried out the Softhood dryer attachment twice and here is my review on the product:

Let me just say I think the design of the Softhood makes a lot sense. It is large enough to fit around my head filled with Curlformers and rods, without being too tight or uncomfortable. The drawstring and chin strap are necessary to keep the Dryer from flying off your head. Once you turn your blow dryer on the cap fills up and you instantly look like  a “space alien”, as my hubby would call it. But it’s a cute pink space alien.

The instructions recommend to only use a Low Heat setting using a blow dryer that sticks into the Softhood, so that’s what I did. The heat distributes comfortably around your head, it only gets a little hot on the back of the neck, but a towel can easily fix that. My ears did not get hot or anything!

 Y’all know that’s a big deal.

I’m used to dryers burning my forehead, ears, the neck, everything, and sitting under the dryer for like 2+ hours to get my hair dry because the heat would not target all of my hair under a typical hair dryer. But the Softhood is incredible! My hair wasn’t completely dry after 45 minutes of drying, but it was at least 80% dried through, and it was super late at night  so I decided to finish by air drying in my sleep. I think if I left dryer on at least 20 more minutes my hair would have been completely dry. But I chose sleep over dried hair that night.

After overnight drying my Curlformers set came out great! My curly cocktail of choice was simply Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, and LottaBody Wrap Me Foaming Mousse.

LottaBody Wrap Me Foaming Mousse

DevaCurl No Poo Decadence Line

SheaMoisture SuperFruit Complex 10-In-1 Hair Masque

My hair was freshly cleansed and conditioned using DevaCurl No Poo Decadence line. Below were my curly results. I give the Softhood dryer attachment a big thumbs up! Not sure how much it actually costs since I won it in a contest. But the Curlformers are about $70 I purchased a long time ago at Sally Beauty Supply.
Let me know if you have used the Softhood yourself and how you feel about it by commenting on this post! Thanks for reading. CW

Product Review: LottaBody Wrap Me Foaming Mousse

Hi ladies!

I recently purchased a new product on Amazon for less than $9, after reading and seeing pic tutorials of great results for perm Rod sets, roller sets, etc. I decided to try a simple flat twist set with perm rods on the ends only. Here are my thoughts on using LottaBody Wrap Me Foaming Mousse for the first time!

Everyone knows that I love wearing a curly twistout, and I also love to keep my curls moisturized as much as I can. Well, when searching for a better product to help give my curls a nice hold, pretty shine, and defining texture, I saw reviews on this foaming mousse. So I tried it myself and I can say I love it!

The LottaBody Wrap Me Foaming Mousse, is said to work on all hair types, and I know my hair typically responds well to mousse products when setting a rod set, so I tried it. I like the light coconut scent it has, and the foam has kind of a cobalt blue tint to it, but it does not stain my fingers or skin, so it must be good for my hair. I felt like it added a little extra volume to my hair, and definitely made my curls softer while detangling at the same time. I decided to put the product on one week old dry curls to see if it would refresh my curls. I also paired it with DevaCurl SuperCream for added condition and moisture treatment. Below is a before and after pic of what my hair looked like.

My dry curlies before applying the mousse

I put my hair in flat twists with perm rods on the ends

slept in flat twists overnight with satin bonnet on

soft, shiny, voluminous curls the next morning!

This product holds very well. Going into the second day after applying the mousse and my hair doesn’t feel dry or limp. That gets me excited! 🙌🏾

Stay tuned for another review, I will try a perm Rod set, or Curlformers set with this product in near future. For now, I highly recommend it. Two thumbs up! CW.

This month I will share about my first DevaCut experience, and new products I am in love with. There are a lot of exciting things going on in my life, life in the Music City, and upcoming travels/vacation, so thank you for reading! CW 💕
